Occupation Retired
My qualifications are four years of service in the United States Marine Corps, which includes one tour in Iraq. I have 18 years of local law enforcement service as an officer, deputy sheriff, narcotics agent, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and regional SWAT commander. I have diverse experience in different types of investigations, including state and federal crimes, throughout my career and have led by example. My servant leadership style has been recognized with medals of valor and other prestigious commendations. I have an Associate's Degree and have been through several supervisor and command schools. I have built relationships with all surrounding agencies and communities, and my approachable personality is how I connect with everyone.
Changes I will make are transparency and accountability, and will ensure we update our community with everything we are involved in. I will hold everyone accountable to the citizens we serve. I would change the name of The Facebook page from Eddy County Sheriff to the Eddy County Sheriff's Office. This subtle change would show that we have a teamwork mindset. I will cross-commission the police officers from departments within Eddy County to show that we are willing to work together to accomplish the goal of the safety and security of our citizens. I will have our admin be involved in community-related programs such as "Donut with a Deputy" that provide public input and questions. Promotion process will be a clear policy for every deputy.
The two most critical problems are a lack of School Resource Officers and the Sherrif's office's relationships with all surrounding agencies. The SROs show that we are doing our part to help in protecting our children and staff. Regarding the relationships with all agencies, this reduces working together to achieve a goal. One example is surrounding agencies needing to be cross-commissioned. We must work together and show we are one team, doing everything possible to serve our citizens. Teamwork would help with accomplishing more tasks and solving more crimes. These changes will help with morale and show the citizens that everyone is trying to achieve the same goal together.
I will immediately begin working on having deputies trained and assigned to help our schools. I will sit down with the school administration and leaders of local police departments and ensure they know I am willing to help out in any way I can. I will inform each agency that we are here as an assisting agency with the same goal. I will also immediately meet with all agencies, cross-commission their officers, share information on what we intend to accomplish, and provide the opportunity to jump on board with them if a program is already in the process. The teamwork mindset is what I am about, and the surrounding agencies know I am excited to work with them so we can progress together as a county.
In regards to someone being in a mental health crisis, I have reached out to a FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center) Instructor for further research on how we can help people in these types of crisis. I would like to collaborate with many organizations in our county that provide services for mental health, and work on having a chaplain available for our deputies. One of the trainings I want to implement at the Sheriff's Office is De-Escalation techniques. Force Science teaches a two day training that is different from Negotiator school and can help deputies with situations regarding dealing with a mental health crisis. I want a few deputies to become certified and then bring that training back to the department.
