A trial judge’s primary role is to faithfully apply the law as enacted by the legislature, follow precedent established by appellate courts, and ensure that every case is decided fairly based on the facts. Should a novel issue arise, the Court must provide a reasoned opinion that is consistent with the law and statute while remaining faithful to the judicial role as an independent arbiter.
By giving each party the appropriate amount of time needed to litigate their case. This includes listening carefully but also ensuring cases are heard timely and efficiently.
Fair-mindedness. The ability to listen to the facts, apply the law and reach a decision without emotion playing any part. A judge is similar to a baseball umpire in that both want to get the call right.
My biggest complaint is that often times several hearings are set on the same day and at the same time. Lawyers and litigants are required to travel to the courthouse only to wait, sometimes hours, for their case to be heard. It’s unfair for litigants who pay their lawyers by the hour and also have to take time off from work for a hearing that sometimes only lasts 10 minutes. More remote hearings would lessen the burden on the litigants.

A trial judge's responsibility is to apply the law fairly - not create it. Judges interpret statutes by following the language enacted by the Legislature and applying binding precedent from higher courts. They resolve each case based on the facts, the law, and the Constitution while remaining impartial and faithful to the rule of law. Trial judges ensure justice is administered consistently, leaving changes in the law to the Legislature and appellate courts.
Due process and efficiency go hand in hand. Every person deserves to be heard, treated with dignity, and given a fair opportunity to present their case. Throughout my career, I have learned that preparation, respectful communication, and active case management help move cases efficiently while protecting everyone's constitutional rights. Justice should never be delayed unnecessarily, but it should never come at the expense of fairness.
Patience. Nearly twenty years representing people from every background has taught me that the best decisions come from listening before judging. Patience allows a judge to remain calm, thoughtful, and respectful, especially when people are experiencing some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Every person deserves to know they were heard, understood, and treated with dignity, regardless of the outcome.
One of the greatest challenges facing our courts is balancing growing caseloads with the time each case deserves. Litigants should never feel like their case is just another file. Judges can improve the process by being prepared, communicating expectations clearly, managing court dockets efficiently, and treating every person with courtesy and respect. Those practices promote both fairness and public confidence in the judicial system.
