I would be a good judge because I have been in the courtroom as a trial attorney for the last 18 years. I have handled cases ranging from Capital Murder to traffic citations. I have tried over 100 cases to juries all over Texas. I have worked on civil cases with some of the largest judgments awarded by juries in El Paso County and the State of New Mexico. I am a board member for the 384th District Court's Drug Court where we help people with addictions try to break free from those addictions so they can get out of the criminal system and become good members of society. But moreover, I would be a good judge because I have respect for the judicial system, for the people of this community, for my peers, and for justice. There is a responsibility judges have, and that is to ensure justice is preserved to all who appear before them. I will make sure all who appear in my court are treated with respect, dignity, and be given every opportunity to seek justice.
I am fortunate to be in a position where I have financed my campaign almost entirely myself. I did not hold a fundraiser seeking money to fund my campaign. The attorneys that have donated to my campaign understand they will not be shown favoritism. I feel they donated to my campaign because they felt I was the best candidate.
I have guided numerous individuals over the years, who wanted to handle cases on their own but did not know what documents to prepare or how to prepare them. I have also handled numerous cases on a pro bono basis. I feel the court should be involved with the Texas Access to Justice Commission to further the goal of the program, but must act within the ethical boundaries.
Emotions can always run high in a courtroom so as judge I must not escalate the situation. I will allow the attorney to make whatever objections need to be made on the record and give a ruling on them so a record is preserved. After, I will bring all the attorneys into chambers and discuss the matter outside the presence of the courtroom, if necessary.
