I have dedicated over 10 years to volunteering in Irving Independent School District, where I’ve actively supported students, teachers, and school initiatives. As a parent of a child currently in the district, I bring a personal understanding of the needs and priorities of our families. I have also worked as a substitute teacher and served on campus improvement committees, giving me firsthand insight into classroom and administrative operations. Additionally, my experience managing multi-million-dollar restaurant operations has strengthened my leadership, budgeting, and decision-making skills, qualities I will bring to effective school board service.
Attracting and retaining high-quality teachers starts with building strong relationships and fostering a culture of respect and support. Teachers need to feel valued, heard, and empowered in their classrooms. Part of this is ensuring they have the authority to maintain a safe, productive learning environment, with measures to address ongoing discipline issues. Within budget constraints, we must prioritize strategic compensation and recognition. This includes rewarding teachers for overall performance, leadership, and impact in the classroom, not solely based standardized test scores.
Our district has not experienced any noticeable changes in enrollment due to the availability of vouchers at this time. If there is an impact in the future, we do not anticipate it being significant. As a Title I district, many of the students who would most benefit from vouchers are likely already enrolled in private schools.
Enrollment in the district has been declining, largely due to broader demographic trends such as smaller family sizes, an aging population remaining in established neighborhoods, and fewer new families moving into the area. This is a challenge being faced by many districts across the country. Declining enrollment can place pressure on the district’s ability to maintain current programs and services, as funding is often tied to student attendance. It requires thoughtful planning to ensure we continue to deliver a high level of education while responsibly managing resources.
I support a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination in any form. This includes clear, well-communicated anti-discrimination policies and procedures that set firm expectations for behavior across the district. Equally important is ensuring there are prompt and thorough investigative processes in place. Any report of discrimination should be taken seriously, addressed immediately, and handled with transparency and fairness. By establishing strong policies and consistently enforcing them, we can create a safe, inclusive environment where all students and employees are respected and protected.
Attracting and retaining families and businesses in our community requires strong schools that excel both academically and in extracurricular opportunities. In addition to maintaining high academic standards, we should continue to invest in quality athletic programs that build school pride, student engagement, and community connection. I also believe we need to prioritize the development of indoor practice facilities so our students can train safely year-round. This would help ensure compliance with UIL guidelines and protect students from practicing in extreme heat or cold.
