I've been licensed to practice 16 years. I have been a prosecutor, defense attorney and an associate municipal court judge. In school, I worked for a bond company. Everything I've done revolves around criminal law. My family knows first hand how the system can have an impact decades after a case is done. Anytime I handle a case, I do whatever I can to make sure outcomes are fair. I know people feel like the system isn't fair or just for everyone, but as judge, I will do my part to make sure rulings are fair, laws are followed, but second chances are possible where it makes sense to give them.
The judiciary is independent for a reason. A judge should always be impartial, fair, and make decisions based on the law and evidence presented in court. I have never allowed anyone to control my decisions by holding support, or money over my head and I'm not about to do that now. I haven't had any ethical violations and I'm not going to start now, nor will I allow any person, political party, or monetary interests to control how I rule. The rule of law, fairness and justice with reign in a courtroom I preside over.
Following the law, making decisions equitably regardless of who comes before the court. Also, making sure everyone has an opportunity to be heard. The other thing that is important is evaluating cases on their merits and the circumstances within that particular case. Decisions made by judges have lasting impacts and those decisions should not be rash, they should be thoughtful decisions made taking into account all circumstances in conjunction with the law that governs the case.
One of the most pressing challenges facing the courts today is the erosion of public confidence when the system feels inconsistent, inefficient, or disconnected from the people it serves. Judges play a critical role in maintaining public trust by being present, prepared, transparent, consistent, ensuring due process, being fair, and treating all parties with respect. As judge, I will make sure the court is transparent, that I am present every day, that I am prepared, that rulings are made timely, and everyone is treated fairly and given an opportunity to be heard.
My philosophy is grounded in the rule of law and protection of constitutional rights. I believe a judge’s role is to call balls and strikes, make decisions based on the facts and evidence presented without personal agenda or bias. I believe in accountability, fairness, due process, and decision-making that keeps the public safe, while also recognizing that a judge at the misdemeanor level can address issues early and provide chances for rehabilitation where appropriate.
