I have been a trial lawyer for 32 years graduating from Texas Tech. I am a former briefing attorney on the 7th Court Appeals, Felony prosecutor in the 47th DA office, private practitioner practicing in criminal/family law. I am Board Certified in Criminal Law and Criminal Appellate law. I've had over a hundred jury trials. I have been the re-elected Judge of Potter County Court at Law #1 for 7 years.
I believe that justice delayed is justice denied. For those bringing civil cases before me whether it be child custody or eviction, all parties need relief as quickly as possible but at the same time ample time to prepare their cases.
For those with criminal allegations, the accused needs to be able to resolve this within the guidelines afforded by due process. Likewise, the victims have the right, the need to be heard so that they may begin healing.
Further, the taxpayer has an interest in moving cases quickly for those who are incarcerated and waiting in jail for a trial. Our jail is overcrowded and it is expensive to operate. Presently, it is contemplated to spend millions (again) to build a new jail. If the prosecution determines probation is appropriate punishment or if a sentence to TDCJ,ID is appropriate, it makes no sense delaying these hearings while we are feeding, medicating, and housing inmates. A trial judge manages these needs concurrent with due process notions.
