Member, State Board of Education: Four-year term. The fifteen-member board decides curriculum, standards, student testing, special education programs, and textbooks for Texas public schools. It also oversees the Permanent School Fund. Current annual salary: Members of the Board do not receive pay, but are reimbursed for expenses to attend meetings.

EdD with research on teacher retention; former teacher, counselor, adjunct professor, and 6-year school board trustee bringing classroom insight, governance experience, and equity-focused leadership.
Teaching world, state, and national history requires honesty. History is not opinion but documented events and contributions that shape our nation. The U.S. was built through the labor, intellect, resistance, and sacrifice of Black and Brown Americans. Removing African American or Mexican American studies erases truth. A full history builds critical thinking and strengthens democracy.
The SBOE can strengthen teacher preparation by grounding it in real classroom conditions. Teachers need mentors and practical training beyond theory to meet students’ academic, social, and emotional needs. Preparation must include trauma-informed practices, classroom management, and family engagement components while holding programs accountable. Lastly, supporting teachers with livable wages.
The SBOE should support learning by using technology as a resource, not a replacement, for strong instruction. Digital tools should complement proven methods like direct instruction, writing, discussion, and critical thinking. Thoughtful integration, such as blending tech with hands-on learning, enhances outcomes while preserving foundational skills.
I am a proud member of Friendship West Baptist Church, led by Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III. My faith is central to who I am, but faith should uplift, not be weaponized. Public education must not mandate religion or privilege one worldview. That is indoctrination, not education, and it limits empathy, critical thinking, and democracy.
I want heightened awareness of mental health and conflict resolution in schools, even possibly as a graduation requirement. We are losing too many students due to poor emotional regulation. I also want TEA to track outcome data tied to student success: which programs improve outcomes, facility closures, and providing districts real interventions before taking local control away from the community.
