I am a parent, literacy and dyslexia advocate, and policy collaborator with direct experience working with the SBOE and Legislature. Evidence-based instruction, Transparency, and Students First.
Social studies should be factual, age-appropriate, and balanced. Students need a strong understanding of Texas history, U.S. civics, and global context grounded in primary sources and historical accuracy. The goal is to develop critical thinking, civic responsibility, and informed citizenship without political bias.
The SBOE should align teacher preparation and instructional materials with cognitive science and developmental research on how the brain acquires language and literacy. Professional development should emphasize structured, evidence-based practices that support learning, memory, and skill development while remaining practical for the classroom.
Research shows that excessive classroom technology can hinder attention, memory, and skill development, especially in early grades. The SBOE should prioritize direct instruction and foundational learning, using technology only when it clearly supports instruction rather than replaces teacher-led learning or collects unnecessary student data.
As a Christian, I believe faith formation belongs first to the families, not government institutions. Public schools should respect religious beliefs without interpreting or promoting doctrine. Students may learn about religions in historical context, but the SBOE, TEA, and ISDs must not step into the role of parents in matters of faith.
Key priorities include adopting evidence-based instructional materials, setting clear academic standards, overseeing the Permanent School Fund responsibly, and enduring transparency in textbooks and curriculum decisions. The SBOE's role is to focus on student outcomes, fiscal stewrdships and public trust.
