We face major challenges on Peaks Island from growing tourism and historical inattention to our needs by the city of Portland. The PIC must be an effective voice with city policymakers and Casco Bay Lines by focusing on those practical issues which most affect our quality of life and the sustainability of our island community. Maintaining a diverse community and our unique island character will be hard work. Marshalling a consensus on key issues is essential if the City, CBL, and other decision makers are to take our concerns seriously and work with us to find effective solutions. In the near-term key issues to be addressed include parking uptown for islanders, preferential ferry boarding for island residents, safety and crowd management issues at the ferry landing, and implementation of the newly enacted rental golf cart regulations. In the longer term, a thoughtful planning effort to identify community priorities going forward would provide a useful roadmap to guide PIC efforts.
I am recently retired from a career of over 40 years with non-profit organizations, trade groups, labor organizations, and federal and state legislative bodies. My focus included labor and health policy, legislative and regulatory advocacy, public and media relations, fundraising, grant acquisitions, and joint venture development. I served for 14 years as the chief executive officer of a national professional society headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. Prior to that I had over 25 years of experience as a congressional staff member, advocate, and advisor on national, state and local political campaigns.

I completed my undergraduate studies in economics and political science at Northern Vermont University, and participated in senior executive education programs at Harvard University’s Kennedy and Business Schools, and Vanderbilt University’s Business School.
