As a tribal leader for the Northwest Band of the Shoshone nation, I have spent my life building bridges of hope and healing. Washington DC is broken, Congress is broken and our country is breaking, I hope to bring people together to get things done for the good of our country. We need an independent voice in Congress that is willing to represent the people of Utah’s 1st Congressional district and not the partisan bickering we see in the news daily.
I believe that we need to encourage Congress to continue to come up with better access to affordable healthcare. I will defend the Affordable Care Act and look for ways to improve it, by lowering costs of prescription drugs and fighting to lower premium costs. The ACA has allowed for thousands of Utahns with pre-existing conditions and young people to be covered. This is a good thing that needs to be protected and enhanced, especially during this time of pandemic.
Unfortunately, when you look at decisions made by most politicians, you can often times follow the money and know why they vote the way they do. My promise to the people of Utah is to represent them, not corporate interests. By taking big money out of the equation, elected officials will probably get along more and be able to get things done for the good of the people.
The fact that a virus has become a political issue is disheartening. I understand that there are many perspectives and it is important to recognize all of those viewpoints. However, that does not change what scientific evidence suggests to us. I am more than happy to listen to someone argue why the earth is flat, but I know that science will prove otherwise. This is the same story with COVID-19. I trust our hard-working healthcare heroes and the scientists working on the front line. Is there a lot we don’t know about the virus? Certainly, but I still trust the experts instead of politicians that claim knowledge on a subject they have never studied. I support mask mandates. Part of living in a society is sacrificing on behalf of the public good. I believe that a mask mandate could keep businesses and schools open. We missed our opportunity to lead as a country and I hope we can do better at making small sacrifices for the good of our country and community.
