The Mountain Lakes School Board MOVE FORWARD candidates, Kevin Driscoll, Patricia Lewis, and Jennifer Parker have outlined a plan to improve communication and Community engagement. We believe open, transparent communication between the School Board, the School Administration and the Community are absolutely essential to a well run School District. Briefly, to build strong, productive relationships between the School Board and Community, we will work for the following: first, ensure existing Mountain Lakes School Board policy is followed and all presentations at School Board meetings are posted in a timely manner and available to the Community; second, encourage and support involvement of community members in Board and School District Committees; third, establish a database which summarizes Community questions with School Board and Administration responses; forth, evaluate each policy decision by listening to all stakeholder groups and determining what is best for all students. Mountain Lakes School Board meetings frequently run many hours which is taxing to both the Community wishing to participate and the School Board. The MOVE FORWARD candidates - Kevin Driscoll, Patricia Lewis, and Jennifer Parker understand there are many challenges to effective meetings with the current School Board. Driscoll, Lewis and Parker will bring extensive business leadership and prior board room experience including and understanding of how to run effective meetings, such extensive business expertise does not exist on the current Board. Second, we will move to establish a School Board structure that includes standing subcommittees in key areas (e.g., budget and finance, infrastructure, curriculum), which will meet regularly and report back to the full Board and the Community. Third, we will improve communication with the Community and thereby increase meeting efficiency by ensuring Board responsiveness to questions and concerns and creating a database which summarizes Community questions with the Board and Administration responses. This past year the Mountain Lakes Community saw major issues with the Administration's development and the Board's review and approval of the School District Budget. The Mountain Lakes School Board MOVE FORWARD candidates, Kevin Driscoll, Patricia Lewis, and Jennifer Parker have a plan to ensure effective School Board oversight of the School District budget and financial planning going forward. First, Driscoll, Lewis and Parker bring over 50 years of relevant business and financial management experience to the Mountain Lakes School Board, addressing a critical experience and knowledge gap in the current Board. More specifically, the MOVE FORWARD plan includes: establishing a standing School Board Finance Committee with the needed business and financial expertise to fulfill the Board's critical oversight responsibility; setting expectations with the School Administration for regular and timely updates on District financials so there are no surprises as in 2019/20; and, establishing a School Board Long-Range Planning Committee to anticipate future challenges and revenue opportunities and to develop a plan which maintains a high quality of education in the School District while being cognizant of the cost to the Community.
