To provide health care access for all, NH must ensure that all citizens have access to the health care system and that health care services are available in all regions of the state. Encouraging and supporting access to affordable insurance programs, delivering clinical preventive services, increasing the use of telehealth, and providing avenues for better patient-provider communication are some of the ways the state can improve access to our health care system. NH also needs a comprehensive, state-wide approach to ending the deadly substance use disorder crisis facing our state, including the expansion and funding of prevention, harm reduction, and treatment programs to transform our fragmented mental healthcare system.
NH has two economies: the Golden Triangle and the remainder of the state. The Golden Triangle includes 42% of the state’s population, is essentially a suburb of the greater Boston metropolitan area, and is the economic engine of the state. The remainder of the state is more rural. Towns and cities are small. Industry includes farming, tourism, lumbering, and small industry. To help build a vibrant economy in NH, we must ensure the availability of a well-educated, well-trained, skilled, and well-compensated workforce with competitive wages and benefits. We must also ensure that the entire state develops the infrastructure it needs to attract and retain businesses.
NH needs to increase the minimum wage (currently $7.25/hour), protect workers’ rights, and ensure that its citizens receive competitive wages and benefits. The poorest of families cannot afford minimum quality housing. $7.25/hour is insufficient to cover rent, utilities, food, health care, and other living expenses. Also, expensive house lots lead to expensive homes which, in turn, lead to reduced home-ownership opportunities for low and moderate-income families and young adults. The state should ensure that zoning laws give communities the flexibility they need to support the development of apartment and condominiums complexes which use less land per housing unit than single-family homes and which are more affordable.
If we want to provide a quality public education that will provide a foundation for a brighter future for our children, we must ensure that the state halts further reductions in aid to our public schools, we need to oppose efforts to divert already-scarce public funds to private institutions, and we must raise the per-pupil level of funding. I support policies to equalize education funding and eliminate the gap for children across income levels and zip codes. I believe that children and teachers have the right to be safe in school and support anti-bullying policies and gun-free schools.
I support basic protections and security for all people in our state, and I believe that everyone should be free from discrimination in all areas of our society including in employment, housing, education, health care, our justice system, and in accessing all areas of public accommodations. I will support legislation that clarifies and strengthens the rights of all citizens for equal wages, equal opportunities, and equal treatment.
