I have 30 years experience as an educator and 4 years as a current Board of Education member.
During the past 4 years a number of areas of importance have arisen. The Board went through the process of redistricting schools on the North end due to adding a new middle school. Implementation of the bond that citizens voted for is also a focal point with numerous additions being approved. The pandemic has presented a new challenge that no board has ever experienced and we find ourselves making decisions with no previous information to use. On-line instruction, athletics, graduation, prom and many other areas of schooling have been disrupted like never before. Responsibilities vary and are many, choosing only one is virtually impossible.
Increasing teacher pay has been in the forefront for years and remains there. Teacher pay is the primary reason for the teacher shortage and unless changes are made from the state level, this will only worsen.
Teachers fill out a satisfaction survey semi-annually and that information is vital in making decisions at the school and central office levels. Professional development is encouraged annually and funds are set aside to make this possible when areas of need are identified through the teacher satisfaction survey.

Research has proven over and over that children who have supportive parents, and have had opportunities for exposure to good learning environments prior to entering school are very successful in school. Pre-K is one of the environments children need.
The supply of teachers continues to dwindle as teacher prep programs on the college level are drying up. Math and Exceptional Children teachers are particularly hard to find. Retention of teachers is becoming more important as the supply of teacher applicants continues to get smaller. Incentives to retain teachers are needed to continue to operate without more shortages.
