Craven County Board of Education District 7

The Craven County Board of Education is the local governing body of the County Public School System. Its members must reside in each district, but are elected countywide in nonpartisan races and serve staggered 4-year terms.The 7-member school board has 5 primary responsibilities: 1. Employ the superintendent 2. Establish policy 3. Determine annual operating and capital budgets 4. Approve student assignment boundaries 5. Oversee the management of the school district’s major systems, including budget and finance, curriculum and instruction, personnel and auxiliary services

Position/philosophy statement My favorite slogan is "Just For The Kids! This extends to students, parents, teachers, principals, community, etc.
I have a passion for education and a zany sense of humor. These two qualities are invaluable to me as a board of education member. This will be the third year that I am on the Craven County Board of Education. While I reside in District No. 7, it is my position that I MUST be an advocate for all students of Craven County.. B.S. The most important responsibility as a board member is to listen as an ally to all of my constituents and to foster transparency. This does not mean that I will please everyone and that some people will not be upset with me.
Professional Development is the highest priority. Teachers need training not just in their content area, but need training for behavioral problems as well. *Training in how to engage students with rigor. *Improve cleanliness of buildings *Safety *Need a nurse in every school all day. This correlates to safety, *Discipline of Students—Need to be consistently meted out

More Teachers More Assistants Increased Pay Funding to help improve our buildings so that they comply with ADA and are safe for students ad staff. Many of our buildings are archaic The above deficiencies are further hampered by pandemic. Due to pandemic, we need funds for food, PPE, nurses, transportation, etc. Solution: Continue to seek funding from county, state and federal entities. When possible, continue to write grants.

Position/philosophy statement I will work very hard to ensure that Craven County is in the top 10% of School Systems in the State of North Carolina.
I have over 28 years of Leadership and Experience in Military and Government service. Through hard work and working with people as a team, I have the ability to bring people together and work through barriers and constraints to produce results for the Children, Teachers and Parents in our community. I currently am a board member and volunteer for Havelock Youth Soccer. Myself and our other volunteers have grown the program from a poorly ran organization to a successful organization.
Give our Students a quality education that prepares them to be productive citizens of society after they graduate High School. Support learning through technology methods that actually work. Support funding for electives in technical classes.
I would allow teachers to submit anonymous surveys on what tools and support they need. Support and fund teachers that seek out developmental training. Ensure teachers receive training on the best technology available to them.
Teachers are leaving because of low morale, and extra demands put on them. Teacher turnover rate is 17%. There are currently 125 vacancies in the district with 49 of them teachers. We need to listen to our teacher's needs. Let them teach and do their jobs. Stop taking them out of the classrooms. We need to keep our good teachers. They don't get paid enough for what they do. They need a pay raise. Recognize teachers that have an exceptional success rate in student improvement and advancement.
Children our our most precious resource! We must protect them. I will push for the funding of full time School Resource Officers at every School. We currently have local and state elected officials that wish to cut funding for School Resource Officers. I believe every school should have a full time Nurse at all hours that school is in session. Not only for a few hours or half the day. Not a floating nurse.
