COVID-19 threatens the lives and livelihoods of Mainers. The opioid epidemic continues to claims the lives of hundreds of Mainers each year. Maine businesses have struggled to attract and retain skilled workers. Meanwhile, young people are moving away to find economic opportunity. Despite the challenges we face, I still believe that Maine’s best days are ahead of us. America's original frontiersmen and women, Mainers are hardy, humble, independent and innovative. When we work together, listen to one another, think differently, and act boldly, there is nothing we cannot achieve. That is the spirit that I seek to bring with me to Augusta should I have the honor to represent my community.
1. Helping families and businesses survive, recover and thrive after the COVID-19 pandemic. 2. Making strategic investments in Maine’s public health, telecommunications and transportation infrastructures that help Mainers live healthy and productive lives with the ability to compete in a global economy. 3. Reforming government institutions and systems so they work for all Mainers, and not just for those with privilege, wealth and special connections.
Citizen participation in the legislative process is necessary for the Maine Legislature to be a truly representative and well-functioning deliberative body. Should I have the honor to represent my community in Augusta, I will actively seek out input and ideas from constituents to help shape solutions to the challenges we face. I will also introduce, co-sponsor or support legislation that seeks to improve elections and strengthen our democracy by expanding ranked-choice voting, opening taxpayer-funded primaries to all voters, adopting ongoing absentee voting, funding clean elections, setting up an independent commission to draw legislative districts, and amending the state constitution to prevent the will of the people from being overturned by the Maine Legislature. These are all reasonable steps that lawmakers could take to restore trust and confidence in government and encourage civic engagement.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I have taken action to support my local business community by raising awareness about the importance of buying local and raising funds to support small businesses. Should I have the opportunity to represent my community in Augusta, I will listen to the concerns of constituents and work to address their challenges. I will introduce, co-sponsor or support legislation that helps struggling businesses, hospitals, schools, towns, and families in my district and our state to navigate this difficult time.
