My two sons attended Polk County Schools and I have been a member of the Polk County Board of Education for approximately 21 years.
This year we face unique challenges due to COVID-19. Budget and financing is always a challenge, but will be especially difficult this year as we face revenue pressure and uncertainty. Remote or virtual learning is another challenge. We discovered when schools were closed that there is a great digital divide in our county. Many families have no or poor internet connections. How can we best serve those students is an important question we will be trying to answer. Creating a virtual curriculum will also be a challenge. How do we reorient our students at the beginning of the new school year and help them create new habits and routines. We also want to be sure we are supporting our teachers and administrators as they are facing new and difficult challenges.
Neither important nor unimportant

Polk County Board of Education has implemented policies and procedures that are protecting our students. During this time of protest, there have been calls to remove resource officers from our schools, but I believe is it important to the safety of our students to keep those officers in place.
As benefits to teachers continue to be cut by the legislature, it is a challenge to recruit and retain teachers. We try to promote an atmosphere in Polk County where teachers feel valued and appreciated and are treated as the professionals that they are.
