VOTE411 Voter Guide

Gloucester Township School District {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

An elected school board member serves a three-year term. The school board represents the concerns of citizens, taxpayers and parents to the school administrators, and represents the needs of the students and school district to citizens, taxpayers and parents. The school board does not operate the district on a day-to-day basis; that is the job of the superintendent (the district’s chief executive). Rather, the school board sets policies, goals and objectives for the district, and holds the superintendent responsible for implementing those policies and goals. (Abridged from NJ School Boards Association website).In 2019, voters will select one candidate for an unexpired two year term in addition to three candidates.

I am seeking re-election because I am proud of the things I have accomplished so far such as expanding preschool and full day kindergarten, new curriculum, chrome books for students in 2nd through 8th grade and smartboards for teachers and I realize that there is still more that I want to do.
We have had to replace very costly roofs on several of our buildings. Something like that can cause quite a hit to the budget. Our district has planned for the future so as to not to force us to go to the public to ask for more money. We need to be fiscally responsible to our taxpayers.
Our district scores have been rising every year since I have been on the board. Test scores should just be used as a guide because some children have difficulty taking tests.
I would like to see the State of NJ to find a way to fund schools without using property tax. Many other states do this.
We are in the process of installing vestibules in all our schools to protect students and staff. This will complement the SRO's we have rotating in our schools.
I am running for the Board of Education because I have a passion to ensure the current generation of learners will be successful future leaders. I had the pleasure of serving as a prior Board of Education member several years past. I am proud to say, every vote I cast was pre-thought with a clause I feel gets forgotten -- how will my vote effect children? I bring expertise to the table in that I have been a prior Board of Education member. I have devoted many hours to classes offered by New Jersey School Boards Association. I have attended seminars, earned association credits, and have tested into the highest school board award - Certified Board Leader. This was done over and above the time commitment given to Gloucester Township.
My top budget priority in a current/post Covid-19 world would be a concern for the 2021/2022 school year. I would budget as conservative as possible due to unknown revenue sources. Our Governor has indicated the State of New Jersey will fall many billions of dollars (possibly 4 billion) short on revenues. I want secure funding, but am not sure where the State shortcoming will hurt school district funding.
I believe there is a valid place for test scores in education. It creates a bar to see where we are, where we need to go, and how we align to state mandated curriculum. I do not believe that it should be the only evaluation tool. There are many children that do not test well. I feel test scores should be coupled with other measures to gain a perspective on the child's performance level. Test score improvements start with providing staff the tools and professional development needed to turn their knowledge into classroom front runner teachers!
As I have been away from the BOE for several years, I do not have the exact numbers, but I believe the current funding formula appropriated an increase to Gloucester Township. Moving forward, I see any current formula changing in proportion to the State deficit.
School safety has dramatically changed and increased with Covid-19. We moved from vestibule dividers, all classroom doors locked, fire drills, lockdown drills, active shooter drills, high tech ID screening, to hand sanitizers, face shields, face masks, six foot floor markings for social distancing, desk six feet apart, remote learning, hybrid learning. But all in all, the underlying message is still the same. No matter where, when, or how often we enter a school building, it is to be a safe haven for all! I vow to make sure when your child enters our schools, it is with a safe, secure environment.
