Spring Lake Heights Borough Council {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

BOROUGH COUNCIL – Full Term – Vote for TwoSpring Lake Heights is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The governing body consists of a Mayor and a Borough Council comprising six council members, with all positions elected at-large on a partisan basis as part of the November general election. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office. The Borough Council consists of six members elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year in a three-year cycle. The Borough form of government used by Spring Lake Heights, the most common system used in the state, is a "weak mayor / strong council" government in which council members act as the legislative body with the mayor presiding at meetings and voting only in the event of a tie. The mayor can veto ordinances subject to an override by a two-thirds majority vote of the council. Most appointments are made by the mayor with the advice and consent of the council.

Keeping the outstanding services and people we have now in an affordable, sustainable way. Our residents know that our town is one of the most affordable places to live and best places to raise a family, and to keep it that way we need to continue to do the things they have come to expect while also keeping our costs (and our tax rate) low. I plan to address these challenges by continuing to empower our excellent staff, making sure they have the resources they need to do the work they have to do for our town, and to revise our long term asset and capital planning. If elected, I will revise our former plans with a consolidated, 5 year plan.
I am a lifelong resident who has grown up as part of the community. I understand the culture and the people very well. Spring Lake Heights is where I am from, where I grew up, and now where I am living with my family and raising my children. I have over twenty years of work experience including more than 10 years now in senior management. Since 2016, I have worked for a local, long standing Insurance Agency as an Insurance Agent and as a Public Entity Risk Manager. We provide Risk Management services to our local county Joint Insurance Fund, which has given me tremendous exposure to the challenges local governments face, including our Borough and most of the surrounding towns. Working with many different local municipalities has helped me learn the many challenges that can present themselves in a town like ours, and also has given me insight in how best to prepare for and handle different situations. My prior experience was in a senior management role with a software company. I managed a global team of 25 people responsible for product delivery, customer support, product quality and sales support worldwide.
Our community needs to be kept safe, clean and updated, while our children have access to the best education possible. Keeping our community safe is the primary responsibility of our police department, which achieved accreditation last year and continues to do a great job. I will continue to support them and ensure they have the support, staffing and funding that they need for this most important task. Our other first responders, our Fire department and First Aid squad, also do a tremendous job and I will likewise make sure they have the resources they need. Keeping our community clean and updated primarily falls on our Public Works Dept., who handle a variety of responsibilities for our town including our water utility. As a council member, and as Finance Chairman, I will make sure we plan appropriately to support and fund what we need to keep our town clean, safe and updated. It is crucial that we provide our children with the education they need to grow into responsible and productive members of our community. I am very proud of our outstanding SLH school, and I look forward to continuing to support the school and collaborate with the school board on any initiatives that will continue to improve the quality of education for our young residents. Finally, it is important that we continue to foster an environment that works for both our residents and the businesses in our community, enabling our businesses to succeed while keeping our residents happy.

Strengthen the Borough Council and enforce compliance with all Borough ordinances - the governing documents define the Borough Council as the primary governing body. The current structure seems to have the Council defer to the Mayor on most actions and activities. We will work to adjust that structure to reflect the Borough governing documents. Focus on fiscal responsibility, transparency and regular communications to residents of the Borough - currently the only means of communications with residents is the twice-monthly Council meetings. We will find ways to create more exchange with and participation by and for residents. Preserve our environment and promote efforts to enhance green infrastructure - energy efficiency and conservation through the deployment of renewable power options will be thoroughly explored and, where appropriate, deployed to the benefit of all residents/taxpayers . And careful and constant review of the preservation of our waterways will be a focus. Further, we will reinvigorate recreational activities for all Borough residents, and enhance both traffic and pedestrian safety.
My recent retirement has allowed me to devote myself to giving back to the community in which I live - Spring Lake Heights. I enjoyed a career of more than 40 years with a Fortune 500 energy company. All of my career was spent in service to customers and our community. I retired from this energy company as a Director of Business and Media Relations, a job in which I spent more than 20 years in direct communication with our constituents and the media nationally, regionally and locally. I believe that the depth of my experience in communications and constituent services would provide a strong foundation for service on the Spring Lake Heights Borough Council. Personally, I served as International Director of the Association of Junior Leagues International and as a member of the Board of Trustees at my alma mater, Marymount Manhattan College. These positions and many other positions of leadership in volunteer and community service organizations have given me unique perspectives and skills for serving my community.
Effective governance, strong communications with all residents, preservation of the environment, and participation in Borough actions and activities are the areas of importance, in my view, for focus in Spring Lake Heights. In each of these areas, I will bring my knowledge and experience, along with a passion for community service, to benefit all of the residents of Spring Lake Heights.
