There are many issues and challenges facing Essex County. The three issues I will name do not encompass all of the challenges, but they are at the forefront as we move into late 2020 and 2021. 1. School/Educational Safety. I believe the most pertinent issues in education we are facing center around the logistical challenges of educating our students and protecting our teachers in safe classrooms, while at the same time providing remote learning options for all students, especially those who may be at high risk of suffering from COVID-19 complications. 2. Property Taxes. I will fight to keep property taxes down to promote affordability for property owners. Also, to ensure fiscal responsibility by relying on our AAA Bond rating allowing a portion stable and lower by making smart decisions. 3. Election Security. I will fight to implement paper ballot voting machines to protect our democracy by providing an auditable system with certified paper ballots. Currently, Essex County is setting a precedent in this regard and will roll out new machines once in person voting is restored.
First, I count it an honor and a privilege to have served the residents of this county over the last 9-years as a district Freeholder and Freeholder At-Large, respectively. I am humbled over the last two-years to have been elected by my peers on the board to lead as president. I believe my experience on the board, coupled with other personal experiences in government including my work for congressmen and senators have prepared and tempered me as the best person for the position. Additionally, having been born and raised in Essex County, I have a unique perspective regarding the needs and the responsiveness to the needs of our residents.

Examples of my responsiveness to the needs of our residents include sensitivity to open space, gun violence awareness, and fair and open elections, which are all initiatives I have advocated for and written legislation.

I support and will advocate for any initiatives set forth to promote social and racial justice. On June 25th, the House of Representatives passed a sweeping Police Reform Bill which addressed many of the concerns that have been brought to my attention. The Bill addresses the need to crack down on excessive police force, ban chokeholds, and establish a national database to enforce standards of conduct and track offenses for all police officers. I am in support of this Bill, it is my intention to advocate for this bill, and I will do all I can to work with the State Attorney General’s office and local law enforcement agencies to put the previously mentioned measures in place at the local level. As a lifelong member of the NAACP, I am aware of the impact that can be made by people of all races to advance the cause of social justice. We cannot, during this crucial time, be silent on matters of racism, equality, and social justice. As long as I have the honor of serving as a public official, this is the course I will take
County government must continue to lead the way in to guiding our communities through the through the COVID-19 pandemic. We must work with the leadership of our municipalities to leadership facilitate the re-opening and the economic recovery of local businesses, we must continue to provide food distribution events for those who are food insecure, and we must promote our free testing sites for residents in need of COVID-19 testing. These items and others are currently in place. We will continue to improve them so that they can provide a framework of what must be proactively planned for should a pandemic, or similar crisis, occur in the future.
