The priority for my Community in the next Municipal budget is the upgrading of the existing sewer system. The current system is over fifty years old. There are concerns and issues with the system and we need to be proactive about it. As the Community continues to grow we need a reliable system that will work for the existing businesses and homes and the new businesses and homes. The Borough has invested in digital video cameras that are used to make repairs in the lines as well as see where blockages maybe to repair the system. The DPW staff are being trained so that they can become certified and make repairs to our sewer system, saving the Borough money that can be allocated for other things.
There are a number of issues facing Municipalities to define one is somewhat difficult. Here are a few: burden of local School Board taxes; attracting new families and businesses to the town;burden of taxes on our Senior and Veteran population; foreclosures and abandoned properties. Currently my top priority is the health and safety of my residents during this Pandemic. In March, when the Covid-19 Virus struck this Country unexpectedly and so viciously a group of volunteers delivered14,000 meals to Seniors provided by Camden County Senior Services. We rallied together as a Community and took care of each other. I will continue working to ensure that the residents have access to resources/services they need until we get through this and after.
I believe every Municipality is Unique unto itself and if they are able to maintain autonomy they should. I strongly encourage Shared Service Agreements between Municipalities. In these trying times and with the strain on so many local budgets, Shared Services are best practices and workable. It is a relief to taxpayers whose household finances are already being stretched thin. Shared Service Agreements allow Municipalities to share personnel and employees; it allows for cross training in various departments, saves on equipment costs and fringe benefits. The Borough of Lawnside currently has Shared Service Agreements in the areas of Ambulance, Fire, EMT, DPW- servicing of equipment and trucks and Lawnside School snow plowing and landscaping
The Borough currently has several Projects taking place. It is very important to build and maintain working relationships with existing businesses and to encourage new businesses to invest in the town. Ratables are very important to every town. I would create a Fluid Marketing Plan to attract new businesses. What is it that the Historic Borough of Lawnside has to offer new businesses looking to start up? What makes US unique? We must think out of the box and utilize various funding streams. I would develop a Community Needs Assessment. I would continue holding round table discussions in small groups with residents. It is extremely important to involve them. Ask for their ideas, input, concerns and suggestions. It is their Community.
