Berlin Borough School District {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

An elected school board member serves a three-year term. The school board represents the concerns of citizens, taxpayers and parents to the school administrators, and represents the needs of the students and school district to citizens, taxpayers and parents. The school board does not operate the district on a day-to-day basis; that is the job of the superintendent (the district’s chief executive). Rather, the school board sets policies, goals and objectives for the district, and holds the superintendent responsible for implementing those policies and goals. I am running for a school board seat for the opportunity to support the school district that my sons attend (4th & 6th grade). Since 2005 I have been working in education. For my first ten years I taught middle school math in multiple school districts. Moreover, I was the Director of STEM & Network Technology for a K-12 school district for four years. This fall I am entering my second year as a Principal of approximately three hundred and fifty 5th & 6th grade students. Throughout my career I have worked with or consulted for educational nonprofit companies such as Student Achievement Partners, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and EdReports.org.
I believe my top budget priority would be reflecting on the curriculum and instruction line items. I believe a community must support its teaching staff with a budget that allows for high rated curricular materials (that align with our state standards) to be purchased as well as the professional learning for staff to support its implementations. Furthermore, administrators should also have the support of a budget that allows them to design effective plans that lead to the maximizing of individual student learning. One example of a support could include the infrastructure of staff at all levels (administrative & teaching).
Test scores are one metric to measure student learning. Recent research on education points to factors such as collective teacher efficacy, teacher estimates of achievement, and student self efficacy as major factors to improved student learning. Our focus should be on assisting all students in filling in unfinished learning gaps. Focusing on relationships and student self expectations of learning should in effect result in higher levels of learning for all students.
Having fifteen years experience in education my opinion is there has not and may not ever be a formula that is best fit for the entire state. As a board member, our role is to reflect on how the formula locally impacts our school community and make informed decisions that will maximize the impact of student learning.
At this time I have not experienced any events or situations within our district that would result in added security or safety measures.
