The challenges facing Asbury Park schools are tremendous - the State cutting our school aid by $24 million, the COVID pandemic forcing our schools to open virtually for at least a month, and the majority of our student population living in systemically underserved communities. The school district needs experienced, disciplined, and thoughtful leadership that will continue to provide a quality education while being fiscally responsible. The Moving Ahead Together ticket of Carritta Cook, myself, and Wendi Glassman (#'s 1, 2, and 5 on your ballot) have a plan to address the future of our schools and our students:

ENSURE A QUALITY EDUCATION for EVERY STUDENT - Expand the Dream Academy program where students graduate with both a high school diploma and a degree from Brookdale. - Expand Career-Readiness with Allied Health, Engineering, and Public Safety programs. - Improve Literacy, Math, Arts, and Job-Readiness of ALL students. - Continue to Increase Enrollment, Test Scores, and the Graduation Rate.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY - Use or Sell Underutilized School Properties. This includes moving adminstration offices and maintainance facilities to the closed Obama School. - Cut Bureaucracy, Not Teachers - Reduce administrators, and conduct a school-wide operational audit. - Improve Energy Efficiency and install solar on all building to reduce utility costs. - Increase Transparency & Communication to the School Board and to the public via a greater presence on social media and via mail
As a community leader and volunteer, I have been involved in most civic initiatives in Asbury Park for the past 15 years, including the Asbury Park Zoning Board, Asbury Park Green Team, Asbury Park Complete Streets Coalition.

When COVID forced our schools and businesses to shutdown in March, I co-founded Asbury Park Dinner Table which has distributed over $200,000 in cash flow to struggling restaurants and 70,000 dinner meals to local families experiencing food insecurity.

As a current School Board member, I have worked with my colleagues to make tremendous strides in the past few years. The results of our hard work are paying off - Graduation rate has gone from 49% in 2014 to 84% in 2020. Dropout rate is down. School suspensions are down 77%. We have more students enrolled than there have been in years. And we have achieved this while cutting over $8 million from our budget.

But there's still more to do. No one is spiking the football yet.

Carritta Cook and Wendi Glassman share my commitment to Asbury Park families. We have the experience, knowledge, and integrity that will put Asbury Park students first, hold the line on financial decisions, and continue to deepen the trust between our community and the board.
I believe in an "all in" approach for our schools. In working with community leaders, the Mayor and council, nonprofit organizations, and the district administration, we can continue the progress and build upon the foundation created by the current Board and administration. The same ingenuity and work ethic we have collectively summoned to make the "Asbury comeback" a reality in our waterfront and downtown must now happen in both the communities where most of our families live, and our school district.

This includes deepening the trust between the Board and the community by expanding our communication and transparency both online and in-person to parents and taxpayers, and demanding timely information and data to our board members.

This includes continually reviewing our curriculum so that it not only meets our childrens' needs but challenges them to be career-ready and life-prepared.

This includes assessing our school propoerties to either repurpose facilities, sell underutlized buildings, or make older buildings more energy efficient in order to save on utility costs.

This includes ensuring that we continue to reduce and repurpose administrators, instead of teachers.

Most importantly, board members must be available and accessible to parents and residents to properly act as advocates for our community. That means regular meet and greets with parents, community leaders, and residents who don't have children in the district - it is what I do on a daily basis.
