VOTE411 Voter Guide

Shrewsbury Borough Council {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

BOROUGH COUNCIL – Full Term – Vote for TwoShrewsbury is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The governing body consists of a Mayor and a Borough Council comprising six council members, with all positions elected at-large on a partisan basis as part of the November general election. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office. The Borough Council consists of six members elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year in a three-year cycle. The Borough form of government used by Shrewsbury, the most common system used in the state, is a "weak mayor / strong council" government in which council members act as the legislative body with the mayor presiding at meetings and voting only in the event of a tie. The mayor can veto ordinances subject to an override by a two-thirds majority vote of the council. The mayor makes committee and liaison assignments for council members, and most appointments are made by the mayor with the advice and consent of the council.

* Our borough council has been controlled by the Republican Party for over 30 years. I would like to bring a fresh perspective, invite more input from our residents and provide more communication and clarity. We have only 4200+ residents...my high school in Brooklyn had 4,000 students and our student government worked hard to hear from many different voices. * We pay high taxes for borough services, our well-respected K - 8 school and the regional high school. I would like to stimulate more collaboration between the council, schools and neighboring towns on initiatives and services. * We MUST protect our dwindling open space and our commercial areas with thoughtful ideas and possibilities. * We and every other town in the county need strong and proactive environmental practices. * I would promote and help enforce science-based guidelines to keep our families safe and healthy.
I have been in Monmouth County since 1974 and have lived in Shrewsbury borough for 24 years. As a Licensed Psychologist, I have had an active practice with an office in Colts Neck for 35 years working with kids, teens and adults. I was a board member and the President of the Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts for 14 years. My volunteer groups include the League of Women Voters, AAUW, the Running and Winning program for high school girls and Citizens' Climate Lobby. I received the AAUW Citizen Action Award and was a Girl Scouts "Woman of Distinction"
Most importantly I want our residents to feel that their opinions and ideas have an important place in borough governance, and that they will be heard and encouraged to speak up at council meetings. Furthermore, I want adults, teens and children to know that their opinions and concerns will be studied and addressed in whatever ways possible.

I would like to establish small discussion groups to discuss quality of life in the borough and where everyone can feel their input is valued.

And I want to preserve our town's beauty and charm while making room for new ideas and new possibilities.

Shrewsbury Borough has been governed for decades by one political party. No matter how good the intentions of the members of the Borough Council, this homogeneity invariably discourages critical thinking, creativity and individual responsibility.
I am a long- term resident of Shrewsbury and an active volunteer in our community. I appreciate and want to further contribute to the quality of life that all residents of our town can enjoy. I believe I bring fresh perspectives and values to the governance of the Borough for the sake of our families, seniors, and children. I am thoughtful, considerate, and open, willing to listen to differing points of view and to collaborate. At the same time, I am willing to question and confront difficult issues, and to represent an initially divergent point of view. I am a responsible and active member of any organization to which I belong. I am committed to positive outcomes in all of my work.
- Thoughtful use of remaining commercial and open space in the Borough. - Improved collaboration between Borough Council and the School Board on school initiatives and services. - Promotion and enforcement of science-based guidelines to keep our families safe and healthy. - Fresh perspectives and clarity in Borough governance. - Strong and pro-active environmental practices.
