My first priority as a commissioner will be to work with leaders across the state and in our community—business, government, non-profit, and philanthropic—both to leverage state and federal funds and make sure community voices are heard. The tough conversations about restoring lost revenues, lost wages, and county infrastructure need to be had. Second, I will focus on the needs of our workforce. We must find ways to create more access to rental housing and single-family homes, to recruit and retain qualified child care providers, and to access health care and mental health services. Third, we must take into account the needs of our business community. Economic diversification must be a greater priority than it has ever been. I am advocating an office of economic development whose goal is to bring all sectors to the table to create real meaningful change. My priorities reflect my background, experience, and values, and are focused on what makes this community so special.
My financial and budgeting decisions will be based on my experiences and values as a working mom, community leader, and outdoor enthusiast. I will prioritize the things that make this community a special place to call home. With this in mind we cannot leave dollars on the table – I will apply for any state and federal dollars and resources to help our budget and County recover from our economic downturn. But hard decisions have to be made, and as Commissioner I intend to create a citizen lead financial review committee, so that citizens can have firsthand access to the difficult financial decisions with which the county is faced. Our residents need to be aware of every spending decision we make sure and the County needs to be accountable to all our residents.
