Experience Matters. I am currently finishing my 2nd term on the board and am the current chairman. Leading up to my time on the BOCC, I served on the Gunnison Planning Commission and two terms on the Gunnison City Council including a term as Mayor. Governance is a skill built over time. I have had significant and relevant opportunities to develop skills in this area.

I feel the other background that makes me a valuable commissioner is my connectivity to the community outside of politics. In my 28 years of living in Gunnison County I have had employment in many fields including food service, retail, construction, ranching, education and with my wife, Roanne, own several small businesses. Our children attend local public schools and as a family we are active in cultural, civic and volunteer activities throughout the valley. I have spent my entire adult life here. From Western, to teaching, to family, to commissioner I have deep roots in this community and remain committed to service.
Affordable Housing: I have shown the leadership to get housing built and have & will continue to do so. Public Lands: 80% of the county is federal lands that tie into all aspects of our economy. I have led on all issues tied to public lands ensuring the community has the ability to conserve and benefit from good management. Economic Resiliency: I have supported an economy with diverse economic drivers. Legislative Leadership: I have successfully used state and federal legislative processes to the benefit of Gunnison County. Ag & Water: I have been a fierce advocate for our ranchers and water resources. Sustainable Tourism & Outdoor Recreation: I will continue to grow programs that protect and manage our outdoor recreation infrastructure, an essential component of our economy. Covid Response: I will continue to use public health guidance and science based metrics to protect the health of the community while simultaneously supporting our local economic drivers and small business
I have always supported a conservative budgeting approach. First we must adequately fund the core services that are required and protective in nature (HHS, law enforcement, road & bridge, juvenile services, etc.) After that I focus on the issues and opportunities that the community has designated as their highest priorities. Through different public input process, we build a strategic plan that sets measurable goals and allocates resources to make those priorities happen. The strategic plan is the northstar and we apply staff, resources and leverage matching funds and grants to succeed. Finally, we maintain reasonable reserves to account for unforeseen needs and opportunities. It is worth noting that the county has consistently won awards for its budgeting & financial excellence, has a A bond rating and all audits in the time I have been a commissioner have been clean and noted for the upmost and sound financial practices. Fun fact-our county budget is always balanced!
