Responsibilities of the office: County Commissioners in Colorado are responsible for adopting the county budget; declaring county emergencies; entering into contracts; purchasing, maintaining and selling county property; providing human services; authority for roadways, land use and zoning in unincorporated areas; developing and implementing county policy; supervision of the County Administrator and staff; and working in cooperation with other elected county officials and municipal officials within the county.Term for each seat: Four years. Economic diversity and financial recovery after Covid 19 then sustainability: Identify diverse funding streams, more grants to supplement the county budget & retain employees. Mill levies to reopen Community Center & for Library autonomy. Promote small businesses as casinos resume to diversify jobs & lessen vulnerability. Strengthen County collaborations: for services along the peak to peak, public-private partnerships, health clinic, senior housing, historic preservation & tourism; assess responder consolidations, Emergency preparedness: Fires are a year-round threat. More public info on disaster preparation; add egress routes & fire mitigation grants; continue partnerships with surrounding responders. Forest safety & public lands: Partner with agencies for mitigation & care of public land with recognition of pressures on residents & land as use increases. Thoughtful growth: preserve our rural historic county; engage public; impacts on land, water, & responder access; history tourism
Gilpin County is one of the hardest hit county economies from Covid 19 crisis due to heavy reliance on the gaming industry for revenue. We will need to diversify revenue streams & support local businesses as they recover. Temporary Mill levies will reopen Community Center & fund Sheriff to buy time to prioritize operations & adjust long-term budgets. Look at Special Rec District, more grants & public-private partnerships to fund front line staff, programs, & rising materials costs. I support departments now securing grants & finding new avenues for funding. While in city government, our Leadership Team made tough priority based budget decisions during & after the 2008-9 recession. Recovery takes time. Need to fund statutory, set priorities, not be top heavy & revamp or eliminate programs less used. Collaborations with other agencies & businesses can strengthen programs and build community. Continued support to residents struggling & aging with less income fits my Social Work experience
