I currently serve as the Colorado Senate Majority Leader. Prior to running for office, I served as the founding executive director for New Era Colorado for 10 years. I currently own a small business called Bread Bar, which is a cocktail bar in the historic mining town of Silver Plume.
My number one priority is addressing the climate and air quality crisis that Coloradans are faced with. Climate change has exacerbated wildfires and made our weather patterns more extreme. Additionally, due to large scale oil and gas extraction, a transportation system reliant on fossil fuels, and extreme fire seasons, our air quality is abysmal and urgently needs to be addressed. In addition to the environmental impact, this situation has a profound impact on our state's future economy and the quality of life of its residents.
As the sponsor of SB181, the most comprehensive oil and gas reform our state has seen, and multiple bills aimed at improving air quality, I hope to build on these successes in the next legislative session.
The health crisis of the coronavirus has quickly transformed into an economic crisis not only for individual families, but also for our state's fiscal sustainability. I'll continue to sponsor and advocate for legislation to provide economic relief in the form of rental assistance, utility assistance, and small business grants. Additionally, I hope to do more for shoring up our unemployment benefits system and other safety net services. I was proud to be the sponsor of the paid sick days bill this past legislative session and hope to build on that success to ensure workers don't need to choose between taking care of themselves when they're sick and losing out on wages.
From the state perspective, I'll continue to advocate for increased revenue in the form of referred measures for voters, closing tax loopholes, and other avenues to help the state get through these challenging fiscal times.
