COVID-19 has shown the world how truly different life has become. New infrastructure will generate wealth, such as a fiber optic initiative to connect every home, business and school. This will increase commerce, produce employment, and create revenue beneficial to Illinois. The state must prioritize spending for people, workers and small businesses first. We must drastically increase the aggregate demand that's needed in order for average people to produce profits and create economic growth. Another big revenue source would be to enact a tax on every single one of the 91 Fortune 500 companies in Illinois that paid $0 taxes in 2018. This extreme wealth extraction has exacerbated inequality my entire life and must be reversed legislatively.
The Fair Tax is a huge step toward curbing the outlandish income inequality that both our country, and this state suffer from. There is no doubt in my mind that the wealthiest 3% of Illinoisans should pay their fair share of taxes. Adding this Fair Tax revenue has been long overdue. Having voters choose what the Illinois Constitution says, is the most direct democratic choice that can be given to the people in order to enact legislation. For decades now, the richest have refused to contribute what's needed to rebuild and maintain this great state. The Flat Tax experiment has obviously failed and a progressive tax replacement is absolutely necessary. #TaxTheRichTax
Those in power often refuse to concede their redistricting control, but that is what's necessary to ensure equal representation for the voters in Illinois. A nonpartisan, or bipartisan independent redistricting commission needs established every 10 years to compile recent accurate voting, and Census information, in order to equally divide each district fairly between the parties. The "stacking, cracking, and packing" to win the majority of many districts with a minority of voters must not be considered democratic any longer.
I returned my 2020 absentee application for the first time ever. Receiving an absentee ballot in my county allows a voter to see their choice of candidates because the sample ballots are not mailed to my county's registered voters. The following statistics show how much reform is truly needed. MIT's Losing Votes By Mail study says 22% of mail-in ballots never get counted. The U.S. Elections Assistance Commissions says 3.3 million absentee ballots were lost in 2016, even 534,000 lost during the 2020 Primary. The U.S. Constitution says the "right to vote" five times, so we MUST ensure a vote cast is a vote counted! I will absolutely advocate for a universal vote by mail system in Illinois, ensuring everyone their equal voting representation.
