By deregulating the sale of cannabis throughout the state. The taxes collected would be used to fund pension liabilities. I would also propose legislation to switch public pensions for public employees and the education segment to a defined contribution plan for those participants willing to take a structured buy out. I would also sponsor legislation to remove the retirement benefit for legislators. I would also sponsor legislation to void the FOID card as the system is unable to meet the current demands which only serves to delay and ultimately deny the people of Illinois their constitutional rights.
Absolutely not. For two reasons. If you can change the constitution for this, you can change the constitution for anything. Secondly, the state of Illinois is suffering from massive outmigration. Enacting a progressive tax structure will only serve to accelerate that issue. The top three percent in which the “fair tax” is intended to target will simply leave the state of Illinois. What will remain will be an ever bloated tax base that has to be spread amongst those that remain behind. Over the long run, this will be a dangerous path for the State to go down.
With respect to the State of Illinois, the power of redistricting should be done by a completely independent third party that has zero affiliation with the State General Assembly or the Governor. The State of Illinois simply cannot be trusted to perform this task with integrity.
Illinois is the most corrupt state in the Union. The state cannot be trusted with such an important personal right that we have. Vote by mail will only serve to embolden corruption all the way down the postal carrier level. While some say this is a weak argument, I simply do not trust our elected officials to do this right.

Passing the Fair Tax is the key to correcting the years of budget impasse perpetuated by the Rauner Administration. In the short term, we need to allocate Federal funds (hopefully) to uphold small businesses that are the lifeblood of our communities. We need to maintain our commitment to the Rebuild Illinois stimulus plan, so that we are generating spending power by our workers and sustaining our vendors. As long as workers have money in their pockets, we will have sales tax revenue. Meanwhile, our larger companies which continue to operate need to meet their tax liabilities. Complete economic recovery cannot happen until the virus is under control. Spending should be prioritized for contact tracing and health care.
Yes. Illinois is one of only a few states with a regressive tax structure. It is not out of the question at all to emulate the Federal tax brackets. The proposal here is very straightforward, FAIR, and only raises taxes on those earning more than $250,00. Those earning less will see their taxes go down or stay the same. If the Fair Tax is NOT passed, legislators will have to make very difficult decisions about what to cut.
I support Fair Maps and independent redistricting. Allowing for partisan led maps to often creates situations where legislators are choosing their voters. This also leads to disenfranchisement and fracturing of communities, and contributes to partisan divides. Our own community of Bloomington-Normal is divided into two state and senate legislative districts. We deserve representation that is cohesive to our community.
Yes, I support universal Vote By Mail. It has been successful in three states already. It increases voter turnout and reduces overall costs for elections.
