As I speak to members of my community, residents make one thing clear to me: the current tax system is not working. The current system places too much strain on middle-class families. The Fair Tax amendment will ultimately be decided by the taxpayers. Regardless of the result of the vote, we must find ways to provide tax relief including property tax relief for working families. We need a tax system that provides relief for taxpayers and funding for our schools.
We can all agree that Illinois' process of drawing districts can be improved to increase citizen participation. Regardless of whether districts are drawn by a commission, by our elected representatives, or by some other means, the goal must be to promote fair and open elections. Redistricting reform can be part of this discussion, but making elections truly fair will require more. It will require us to take a serious look at the obstacles that still keep too many from voting, and consider how campaigns are financed. Ultimately, I believe redistricting reform needs to happen at the federal level, so every state is playing by the same rules. The most egregious examples of gerrymandering have been conducted by Republican-dominated states with the intent of splitting up communities of color and keeping them from electing leaders of their choosing.
Gun violence is a public health crisis. We can protect our communities from gun violence while still protecting the Second Amendment. I support common sense gun safety laws that keep guns out of the hands of convicted criminals and domestic abusers. I support evidence based common sense gun reforms like red flag laws that have been proven to keep our communities safer. I will push for funding to support community violence prevention programs and mental health services that will help communities in need. Every Illinoisan should have access to basic health care services including mental health and addiction treatment.
