Tippecanoe County Recorder

The recorder is a constitutional officer, elected for a term of four years by vote of the county at large, but prohibited from serving more than eight years within a 12-year period. The chief function of the recorder is to preserve public records, including deeds, mortgages, liens, leases, articles of incorporation and amendments, certificates authorizing foreign corporations to do business within the state, army and navy discharges, bankruptcy notices and other documents. The recorder receives a fee for recording instruments and certificates, which are paid to the county treasury. The recorder cannot accept recording instruments that do not bear printed, typewritten or stamped names of the people signing them, unless accompanied by an affidavit certifying the correctness of the names represented by the signatures. This rule does not apply to court orders, decrees and judgments, writs, wills, death certificates or instruments executed outside of the state.

I am an experienced public servant with four years as the Fairfield Township Trustee and four years on the Fairfield Township board along with twelve years as a public library administrator. I am an advocate for inspiring change. I am a strong leader who embraces technology, examines and improves processes. I believe that county government should be run with a collaborative team, and invested department heads leading the charge for transparency, improved customer service, and accountability to the taxpayers.
The County Recorder office is tasked with recording and maintaining accurate property tax records which inform the assessor and auditor’s offices to accurately collect property tax revenue. This is critical financial sustenance to provide the necessities of citizen services such as public safety, education, libraries, and township assistance. The office is responsible for legally recording documentation and making sure it is accurate and available to the public.
I will evaluate adopted software systems for cost and efficiency. I will coordinate team meetings with the taxing office department heads, and lead user friendly accurate and accessible essential property tax records. As a new recorder I will start by getting a financial picture of the office as it is today in terms of in flows/out flows and the sources of those incomes by transaction type. I will review the entire fee structure to determine which one should be changed and or removed. This will give the Recorder’s office a basis for funding automation investments.
