Position/philosophy statement This race is not about me. I am running to do something, not be something.
All the responsibilities of the office are very important. The statutes dictate the Office of the Lt. Governor will preside over the Senate and hold positions of membership on the State Board of Education and the State Board of Community Colleges. These duties include breaking a tie vote in the Senate, establishing decorum, fair play, and allowing diverse voices to be heard on issues in the Senate; being an active participant on the boards will allow me to work with education on several levels. The flexibility of this office will allow me to further develop and implement my Affordable Living Initiative (ALI) platform. This encompasses establishing a statewide initiative that brings together citizens, public/private partnerships, non-profits, urban and rural governments, House and Senate legislators, environmentalists, and homebuilders to help solve some of the problems that affect us and have become critical needs in communities across North Carolina.
These are all ongoing issues that working hand in hand with partners, with a qualified and dedicated staff, we can handle these issues. In North Carolina, there is no state agency that is solely in charge of housing, affordable food, economic development, jobs, or any of the Affordable Living issues covered by ALI. It would be my priority to oversee state-wide ALI programs out of the Lt. Governor’s office.
As a current NC Legislator having served four terms in the House, I already have knowledge about the resources and how to use the framework of existing policies. I have a successful history bringing diverse people together and working across the aisle. Through information sharing, assisting with common value bills, and opening the dialogue, we can be successful by utilizing state agencies, industry lobbyists, and various urban and rural communities to promote and develop legislation where needed. Another part of my formal career experience that enables me to be an effective Lt. Governor, is my 25 plus years as a Procurement Specialist for the NC Department of Administration in the Division of Purchase and Contract. My responsibilities included large dollar purchases of all kinds of equipment, supplies and services; and designed developed and administered statewide term contracts for goods and services for state government - including the university system. This experience gives me insight into the inner workings of government.
