There are many responsibilities on what a School Board Member does some important ones are: * Setting the vision and goals for the district. * Adopt and oversee the annual budget. Working with our County Commissioners with budget matters. * Hire and evaluate the superintendent. * Adopting policies that will better our school system

Personally, one of the most important responsibilities is listening.. Listening to concerned parents, teachers, children, and citizens and guiding them through the proper channels so they get a resolution. Also, working together as a team and invite fresh, positive ideas and listening to other perspectives.
At the time that I am writing this we are in a State of Emergency with COVID. Our school year is up in the air right now. What I do know is that any plan that the Governor places, we will need funds to cover it. We may need more teachers or more school supplies, like computers for every child (along with internet access). Not every family has those things and it isn't fair for those children not have what they need to be successful. We need the State to fully fund what they are requiring counties to do, so we would not have to rely on our County Commissioners to help out with the difference. We need to lower class sizes and make sure our schools have what they need to run successful. We can not do that with out help from our Commissioners because the State does not give us enough funds. To me, schools should be our #1 priority and we should do what we need to do to make sure every school and every child is successful.
We offer a lot of professional development through out the year, but we also have a teacher summer academy every year where teachers can take professional development classes. When I taught, we did not have that and I always had to seek professional development on my own. We have come a long way with that and I think we do a great job with giving teachers plenty of opportunities to seek professional development. Teacher satisfaction is assessed with teacher surveys. We have always had them, but I feel recently that the school system is actually listening to the struggles the teachers are facing and helping them. Keeping teachers and staff happy is essential. They are with our children everyday trying to make a difference, they deserve to have the best working environment.

Preschool promotes social and emotional development. It is an opportunity for growth and children having to make decisions with out their parents help. It is a great environment for children to socially explore, learn to play, share with others, and build self confidence. Having a structured environment and knowing basic fundamentals for Kindergarten is essential as well.
One of the biggest issues is money and incentives the other counties are able to provide. It is hard to compete against other counties when they are giving sign on bonuses and incentives to go work at their schools. We do not have to funds to do that unfortunately.
