Position/philosophy statement When we expand Medicaid, invest in public education, and protect our air and water we will help people and build a better economy.
We must expand Medicaid as soon as possible. Along with saving lives, it will help create new jobs, add new tax revenue for the counties, and build stronger economic development. Eden's local hospital was saved from bankruptcy several years ago. In the midst of the 2020 pandemic, they have lost business again. Rural communities need healthy citizens, and those citizens need local financially stable healthcare.
Democrats in the legislature have everything ready to go. Phil Berger has been the main block to the expansion. Removing him from the NC Senate will get NC citizens the healthcare they need.
The current policies aren't doing enough to benefit the everyday citizens. Current leadership claims to have lowered taxes at the same time of making services taxable that weren't before (ex. labor on car repairs). Shifting income tax to sales tax benefits the wealthy and reaches deeper into the pockets of the neediest among us. Corporations are only paying a small percentage of what we individual citizens are paying in income tax. Incentives to businesses can be a great tool, but they have to be directly linked to creating full time jobs with benefits to truly help the communities they set up shop in.
