An elected school board member serves a three-year term. The school board represents the concerns of citizens, taxpayers and parents to the school administrators, and represents the needs of the students and school district to citizens, taxpayers and parents. The school board does not operate the district on a day-to-day basis; that is the job of the superintendent (the district’s chief executive). Rather, the school board sets policies, goals and objectives for the district, and holds the superintendent responsible for implementing those policies and goals. I’m running for the Camden City School board because I believe that we as residents need qualified individuals addressing the needs and concerns of our community. I have over 22 years’ experience working with youth and families from the Juvenile Justice, Foster Care, and from working within the school system as well. I am experienced in working with and overseeing budgets and finances as well as working in high paced and demanding positions. I have been both a volunteer and paid employee advocating for and working directly with youth and families.
The top budget priority within the Camden City school system is transparency. There is a dollar amount attached to each and every child within the Camden City school system as well as a dollar amount associated with the schools and services to be provided. The fact that over the years the Camden City school system has suffered at the hands of inadequate financial accounting and accountability is an issue. There should be true transparency in budgeting and expenditures so that our young people and community are represented properly.
My view on test scores are that although they may show a young person’s ability to meet or not meet standardized test measures they don’t always adequately reflect if a young person is grasping the concepts being taught or if the young person is learning up to their ability. Steps that could be taken to address this are teaching young people how to apply what is being taught to real world situations so that they can grasp the concepts being taught as applicable.
The latest formula for apportioning state aid for schools should be revised on and equitable standard as opposed to equality. The reason being is that each community has different needs and funds equally doled out in terms of numbers will not properly address the observed and actual needs of every community.
In the Camden City school system, we need greater presence of Police Officers within the main routes that our young people take to school as well as more in school services / classes to address the mental development of our young people. Many safety and security issues within our school system are put in place as a reactionary measure and we need to be more proactive. There also aren’t many options for our young people and families within the school system to get the needed services that one who needs mental help requires
