Elected Arlington Commissioner of Revenue in November 2003, I took office on January 1, 2004. Before my election, I served as Arlington Deputy Treasurer for eight years. I have over twenty five years of public and private sector management experience in the areas of public finance, international and domestic banking, small business lending, and human resources. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a major in Computer Information Systems from the University of the District of Columbia, and an MBA from Averett University. I am a Certified Master Commissioner of Revenue, and a graduate of Leadership Arlington. Born in The Netherlands and raised in Suriname (South America), I speak six languages, including Spanish. I live in South Arlington (Douglas Park) with my husband Jerry Botland.
The Commissioner of Revenue is the tax assessing officer for the County for all property except real estate. The office is responsible for discovering personal property (cars, motorcycles, boats) and business property (office equipment and furniture) in the jurisdiction, and assessing them equitably. The office is responsible for administering business taxes such as business license tax, and custodial taxes such as restaurant tax, short-term rental tax, transient occupancy tax and others. We assist taxpayers with their state income tax returns. For fifteen ears, we have managed a DMV Select under an agreement with the DMV in Richmond. We can handle most vehicle related transactions, such as renewing vehicle registrations and obtaining titles for new and used vehicles. DMV Connect, a full service of the DMV, is available every first Wednesday of the month at our offices. At the “Connect”, customers can renew or obtain driver’s licenses, id cards, and the new Real ID.
Since 2004, the top priority of our office has been and continues to be to provide fair and equitable assessments so that the tax burden is shared equally by all. Our office is fortunate to have dedicated employees who manage compliance and enforcement programs while delivering quality customer service that Arlington residents and businesses expect and deserve. Providing additional career opportunities for our staff has greatly furthered the level of institutional knowledge, kept our turnover rate low, and enhanced continuity of operations, all for the benefit of our customers.
