Somerville Borough Mayor
The governing body of Somerville consists of a Mayor and a Borough Council comprising six council members, with all positions elected at-large on a partisan basis as part of the November general election. The mayor presides at meetings and votes only in the event of a tie. The mayor can veto ordinances subject to an override by a two-thirds majority vote of the council. The mayor makes committee and liaison assignments for council members, and most appointments are made by the mayor with the advice and consent of the council. The Borough Council elects a member to serve as Council President to act in the absence of the Mayor. Each council member is appointed by the Mayor to one of six standing committee's during the Annual Reorganization Meeting held on January 1 of each year. The Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office.

Taxes are always Somerville's number one issue, and I am constantly seeking new revenue sources to fund essential services. We have turned several former contaminated industrial sites into high-quality residential units, and that additional money, along with new payments being collected from Somerset County and Somerset Medical Center, is being used to stabilize taxes while helping to upgrade our roads, sewers and public property.
I have twenty- four years experience in local government, and people know me to be accessible and accountable. They trust my judgment and know the work ethic I bring to serving Somerville. My Democratic team and I are well-equipped to meet the challenges ahead in keeping Somerville clean, safe and affordable.
We have a proven track record of working with developers. The Borough Council, Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment have many long-time members who are well-versed in issues of land use, and our paid staff is professional and thorough in managing projects to successful conclusion. We often receive compliments from builders and homeowners about their construction experiences, and many functions are now available on-line to make the entire process more user-friendly.
Our Police Department works closely with the Board of Education .They conduct regular drills, and meet with school staff to refine and improve safety procedures. Our DARE program, Youth Police Academy, National Night Out and active community policing programs build trust between our children and our police officers.
Safety in getting to school is always a town priority. We maintain crosswalks and sidewalks, and monitor crossing guard posts on a regular basis. We have added flashing stop signs at key intersections, and have petitioned NJDOT to reduce speed limits and change traffic light timings near school zones. My children and i attended school in Somerville for many years, and I want today's students to be as safe as we were.
