Renton School District No. 403 Director District No. 3

4-year term. No salary, but some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board members, or “directors,” are the elected governing body of the school district, serving four-year terms. The school board’s governance responsibilities fall in four major areas: Vision – a focus on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – prudent financial planning and oversight, as well as diligent and innovative policy-making; Accountability – specific goals and a process for evaluating, reporting and making recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – championing public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional district superintendent and certificated teaching staff and personnel. One of its critical duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any school levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The board sets policies and approves all spending via the budget. It also sets salaries for school district employees.

1.) Bridging the gap between early learning programs and elementary schools 2.) Address overcrowding and lack of available resources to teachers and families 3.) Balancing the budget by creating new lines of revenue
I would explore piloting a program which connects Preschool Teachers with Early Elementary School Teachers. Invest in Early Learning as a district because positive birth-5 experiences set the trajectory for long term education outcomes for students. I believe support with social and emotional development is pivotal for all children, however many are entering Kindergarten lacking the emotional regulation required for school success.
I will spend time within each school to evaluate the programs greatest needs, and set goals and realistic time frames with school leaders. I will also hold schools accountable to their goals, and reward schools who exceed expectations.
We need a better process to communicate with families which individuals are in contact with their child. Like most community members I was deeply disturbed by the incident which happened with a music teacher at Cascade Elementary, this is the school my son attends. When I reached out to the district for more information about why I didn't know there was a new interim music teacher at my son’s school I was told it is not the district policy to inform families of staffing changes. This needs to change. As parents we have a right to know who is caring for our children as any given time.

Technical training should be offered in as many different ways as possible. Partnerships with colleges and large corporations are key. Students about to enter the workforce should gain the skills they need to grow a career the moment they graduate. These should be on site, at college campuses, and at corporate sponsored technical training campuses.
