Souderton Area School District School Director (4 YR Term) {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

A school board is a legislative body of citizens called school directors, who are elected locally by their fellow citizens and who serve as the governing body of each public school district. Each board consists of nine members who serve four-year terms of office. Unlike most other elected officials, school directors receive no compensation for their work. Principal duties include appointing and/or dismissing superintendents, principals and teachers; levying school taxes; purchasing land; locating new buildings; adopting textbooks and courses of study; fixing salaries of teachers and other appointees of the Board.

I wanted to be a part of this wonderful community by working together and by helping our children continue to have a tremendous place to learn and grow as innovative contributors to society. I also wanted to get involved because I have lived in the district most of my life and my son has been a student in Souderton since he has been in kindergarten. Honestly, Souderton Area School District is an overall fantastic school district. It has a diverse student population, which is important to me. Another area of importance is social and emotional learning. Social and emotional learning is especially important in students of all ages, as they face their own development, peers, and the idea of succeeding. My goal is to collaborate with school officials, teachers, students and parents to promote a culture of mental health awareness and resiliency in our schools. Providing a quality education, rich in scholastic, music, art and sport all while remaining fiscally responsible is also important.
First of all, I am married to my wonderful husband. Our son is currently in ninth grade at Souderton High School. I have lived in the district the majority of my life and I graduated from Souderton in 2003. I am a nurse by profession, a student, furthering my nursing career at Montgomery County Community College, and an energetic, positive person who takes pride in my community. I am an advocate by nature and profession. I have been faced with many challenges in life but, with a tenacious work ethic, have overcome them. I have participated in the Employer of Choice Committee at the Lutheran Community at Telford and was appointed to the Souderton School Board in January 2019. I have been appointed to the Policy committee and Education-Personnel committee on the School Board. Since my appointment, I have been touring schools and having discussions with school officials and principals regarding federal grants to pursue for funding of social and emotional programs throughout the district.

I am an advocate for strong public schools in this Commonwealth and this country. I am very upset with the unfair funding formula that Souderton Area School District must pay charter and cyber schools. The current formula drains much needed tax dollars away from our district. Additionally, charter and cyber schools do not have caps on their budget balances as does the public school. Since I am a retired public school teacher, I will have the time to devote to contacting state legislators to make funding formulas more fair in the future.

I am very concerned with the safety of our students. It is outrageous to think that we have to spend time and resources on "active shooter" drills. However, given this current climate in our country, I am very much opposed to arming teachers as a possible solution to this crisis. I now have the time to campaign for banning assault weapons with our state representatives.
My education and thirty-one year's experience in the classroom qualifies me to serve as a school board director, I believe. I know first hand the challenges of delivering a sound education to students of all abilities. I know the importance of communicating with teachers and administrators when changes to curriculum are proposed. I know the impact that high stakes testing has on students and staff. I understand the intricacies of negotiating and implementing contracts with staff. As a human resources manager for several years, I know the difficulties of securing medical and dental benefits for staff that is adequate and affordable. I have the skills to have courageous conversations with all the stake holders in a school district to discuss options for issues that always arise while remaining friendly with all participants.

My 7-month-old son is my primary motivation for running for School Board. Since his birth, I have been thinking of ways to become more involved in the community that would have a positive impact on his future. The Souderton Area School District is a great district, but the lack of full day kindergarten and recent cuts to busing has me concerned. Not having a full day kindergarten program in the district creates a socio-economic disparity in our community as some families can afford to send their children to private full day programs and some cannot. It also puts children who only attend the public half day program at an educational disadvantage as they start 1st grade already behind others. The recent expansion of the walking radius to 1.5 miles in addition to the elimination of several crossing guards increases the risk of walking to school. The Souderton School Board needs to put the safety and education of our children ahead of short-term cost savings.
My background is in evaluating fraud, financial, and operational risks within an organization and designing ways to test control environments to determine the likelihood of such risks. I would bring significant financial knowledge as well as an attention to detail to our School Board in evaluating the operational and financial risks in the district. I also have a significant knowledge of the healthcare system as I've worked for a regional Blue Cross Blue Shield organization and currently work for a pharmaceutical distribution company. While at Drexel getting my Master of Business Administration, I had a concentration in Healthcare Management which will help inform the decisions I make on funding and evaluating the district health plan. Lastly, I am a working mom that values families and have a personal stake in the future performance of this district. I want a strong district that will stand out among others and serve the needs of all families regardless of background or income.

When I ran and won election to Souderton’s School Board in 2011, I got involved to control spending and to make the district more fiscally responsible. As Finance Chairman for the past (6) years, I've made that happen. I’ve worked hard with the administration to deliver some of the lowest tax increases throughout all of Montgomery County without affecting programs, services or the educational opportunities afforded to our students. Furthermore, Souderton’s Superintendent, Business Manager and I were invited to Harrisburg to present our budgeting philosophy to the PA Senate. Upon completion, it was suggested that our governing format be sent to all school districts throughout the Commonwealth. Therefore at this point in my career, I wish to continue my tenor on the board to address the rising costs of unfunded mandates on the whole community, and to be a voice for pension reform to our local legislators.
Having served as a Souderton School Director for (8) years already, I have a strong foothold on the requirements, time commitment and responsibilities needed to be a valuable servant to the community. My professional career affords me the skill set to negotiate contracts for a living; therefore it comes in handy when addressing the multitude of agreements needed at the district level. Whether it involves teachers, support staff, transportation, construction or maintenance contracts, I’m able to use my private sector experience to benefit the school district. Moreover the professional relationships I’ve accumulated over the past 23 years have proven quite valuable. They’ve opened up new revenue streams allowing us to fund programs and projects without negative implications to our budget or undue burdens on our taxpayers.
