Current Occupation Smithfield Township Supervisor
Qualifications for Office Over 20 years in the Social Service field working with children and families in the schools and community. I am a USMC Veteran and father of five children. I served 1 term, 6 years as a Supervisor and have a good working knowledge of how the different agencies - governmental; local/state/federal, advisory boards, planning commissions, volunteers, consultants, engineers, solicitor, zoning, sewer, roads and of course budget all come together in a single project. Each day provides the opportunity for learning as new challenges, new ideas, and different projects develop. In conjunction with the Township's involvement in the Oakgrove Recycling Center, I have brought in 2 grants totaling $430,000. The grants have allowed the Township to purchase equipment without impacting our General Budget. The most recent grant will be used in part to purchase a new truck enhancing workers safety and effectiveness. This will reduce injuries, time lost, and worker's comp claims. My motivation and desire to continue as a Supervisor is to serve the residents of Smithfield Township - trying to preserve and enhance our natural surroundings while facilitating responsible growth and development.
Our fire and ambulance services are experiencing financial and personnel shortages. As a Township we recently enacted a tax incentive for emergency services volunteers. We are also developing an ordinance allowing for fire companies to be reimbursed by insurance companies when available for services. These are gestures of our support for the fire companies and emergency responders but by no means a cure all and more needs to be done. The Oakgrove Recycling Facility is a great example of three Townships - Price, Middle Smithfield and Smithfield working cooperatively to establish a single facility serving all 3 Townships. This provides a great reduction in redundancy of systems, equipment and manpower - saving each Township precious budget dollars. We also work cooperatively with Middle Smithfield in our bike pump park. I would like to explore other areas where common goals and mutual agreements lead to productive results.
