Almost 20 years of education experience as a public school librarian in both elementary and middle levels
A policy that I would like to see continuously reworked and added too is the policy regarding collection development and book challenges. I believe a school district should have a strong policy in place to help ensure access to all appropriate materials by students.
Another policy that I would like to see reworked is regarding volunteer clearances. Right now, a parent/guardian who is an educator and has all the more comprehensive clearances that the Pennsylvania Department of Education requires must pay to get a new set of clearances to volunteer. The reason for this is unclear. If we trust teachers to teach under the PDE clearances, they should be able to transfer to use for volunteering.
I have attended School Board meetings (including committee meetings, budget workshops, and capital project town halls) in person or virtually. I am familiar with the structure and procedures of the Board from these experiences, from being on Trumbauersville Borough Council which is run with the same structure, and also from the perspective as an educator.
I am a third generation graduate of the Quakertown Community School District - my children will be the fourth - so I have been part of this community my whole life and a product of QCSD education. This gives me a unique understanding of Quakertown and surrounding boroughs/townships.
Currently, I am on Trumbauersville Borough Council so I am familiar with policies, procedures, and the effects on a community.
I have also been a public school librarian for almost twenty years. I am in a middle school currently but have taught in an elementary school. I have had a chance to see the needs, challenges, and successes at each level. I see how policies and decisions affect faculty and staff and will bring a different perspective to the Board.
