The Coroner's chief duty is to investigate all sudden, unexplained, or violent deaths occurring within the county. When no physician has attended the deceased, burial is not permitted until the coroner issues a certificate stating the cause of death. If the cause of death cannot be otherwise determined, an inquest and an autopsy will be ordered. In case of death which might have resulted from a criminal act or neglect, the coroner conducts an inquest and calls witnesses as a sitting magistrate to find criminal negligence or intent. If criminal intent is found, the case is then bound over to the Court of Common Pleas. In some cases, the coroner may require the assistance of a six-person jury which is selected at random from the jury candidate roll. The coroner is also in charge of all county forensic services.Source: http://www.buckscounty.org/government/RowOfficers/Coroner

I am running for County Coroner because I care about people and how they are treated both in life and in death. As a nurse and an attorney, I have been an advocate for the vulnerable and for those who could not speak at all for themselves. The increased number of deaths due to suicide, addiction, and mental illness continues to be a major issue in Bucks County. The Coroner’s Office is uniquely positioned to provide data to other departments so that we can prevent many of these deaths by uncovering trends and areas of weakness to positively influence our community. As Bucks County Coroner, in addition to being a vigilant proponent of public safety, I will ensure that those who pass and their loved ones are treated with the utmost respect and dignity deserved by all.
As the description suggests, the Coroner is a medical-legal position. With both a medical and legal background as a nurse in critical care and the operating room and as an attorney, I am uniquely qualified to handle the stressful demands of the job with both compassion and conviction. As a business owner and trained mediator, I am certainly prepared for the administrative side of the job. Sitting on the board of Central Bucks EMS, I am aware of health concerns facing Bucks County. On September 11, 2001, I joined the American Red Cross, volunteered at Ground Zero, and have been dedicated to emergency relief ever since working closely with first responders. The ICRC honored me with the Florence Nightingale Medal, for “exceptional courage and devotion to caring for the victims …” I’ve also been recognized for my work with victims of abuse and as active community advocate, I have fought for the integrity of our community. It will be my honor and privilege to serve as County Coroner.

As a life long county resident who has lived throughout the county, I feel this is a great place to live and raise a family. As the Coroner, we are the last person looking out for the interests of the deceased. The residents of Bucks County deserve the best quality forensic investigation available should their death fall under our purview. I will work tirelessly to ensure the most accurate cause and manner of death. This is accomplished through advanced training of our staff and applying best forensic technology available. We always strive to use the most efficient investigative practices available. We are currently working toward a paperless office with plans for bar code labeling, and direct uploading of toxicology data into each respective case file eliminating the chance of data entry error. I wish to see these projects through completion and final implementation. We will continue to provide data to our public health programs facilitating the delivery of county services.
As a licensed practicing Physician with 19 years of death investigation experience, I am the best qualified candidate for Coroner. My medical background, experience, and education give me knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and toxicology, which is invaluable for this job. As the current President, past vice president, and executive board member of the Pennsylvania State Coroner’s Assoc, I understand the mulifaceted issues that coroners face on a daily basis across this commonwealth. I have responsibly managed the coroner’s office and have successfully modernized the overall operation of the office during my tenure. We have repeatedly stayed within our budget due to the efficient hard work of our staff. I’ve overseen the planning and construction of Bucks County’s morgue/crime lab which opened in 2007 consolidating the coroners office operation.
