My priorities in office are transparency, community engagement, and oversight. I want to be part of a School Board that publicly discusses the issues on their agenda. The Board should be asking questions about programs, curriculum and how money is being spent. The Board should engage with the community by listening to parent and community feedback and solicit such feedback when making decisions. I also would like to see contact information for each School Board member available on the district website. The Board must provide oversight of the administration by asking questions and holding them accountable.
Promoting social and racial justice is very important to me. I believe that teachers should participate in professional development on this issue. Having a staff that is trained to be aware of biases and to work against that can improve the lives of children. Our district can partner with universities on this work and recruit teachers of color. Having a diverse teaching staff will teach students on a daily basis that we are all equal and can learn from each other.
I applaud the district for starting a Pre-K program. My hope is that it will be so successful that we can add more classes to it the following year. We will then provide more opportunities for children to be ready for Kindergarten. I believe it is also important for School Board members to promote and support our local libraries and perhaps develop outreach programs through the libraries. If we can get children more exposure to books, we can build early literacy, which builds confidence.
