Snohomish/Skagit County Fire Protection District #24 Proposition 1

Proposition Authorizing Property Tax Levy The Board of Commissioners of Snohomish/Skagit County Fire Protection District No. 24 adopted Resolution No. 2017-7 concerning a proposition to maintain and adequately fund District operations. This proposition would authorize the District to restore its regular property tax levy for maintenance and operations to an amount not to exceed $1.25 per $1,000.00 of assessed valuation to be levied in 2018 for collection in 2019. The dollar amount of the 2018 levy shall serve as the base for the purpose of computing the limitations for subsequent levies as provided by chapter 84.55 RCW. Explanatory StatementDarrington Fire District 24 provides fire protection and emergency medical services to its citizens in Snohomish and Skagit Counties. This proposition will authorize the District to establish its regular real property tax levy rate (which is currently approximately $0.73 per thousand of assessed valuation) to a levy rate of $1.25 per thousand dollars of assessed valuation. The District's Board of Commissioners has determined that establishing the levy rate at $1.25 per $1,000 is necessary to maintain an effective level of services, firefighter/EMT staffing, recruitment and training of volunteers, equipment and facilities in light of rising costs. Approval of this measure will allow the District to maintain and improve the level of fire protection and emergency medical services. If the levy is approved, the District would assess the new rate in 2018 for collection in 2019. In subsequent years, absent further voter approval, increases will be subject to the statutory one percent limit over the amount levied in 2018. If the levy is approved, the maximum tax per $100,000 assessed valuation would not exceed $125.00 each year or approximately $10.41 per month for fire protection and emergency medical services.
