ORTING SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 344 Proposition No. 1

Replacement Educational Programs and Operations LevyThe Board of Directors of Orting School District No. 344 adopted Resolution No. 4.2017-2018 concerning a proposition for a replacement levy for education. If approved, Proposition No. 1 will authorize the District to levy the following excess taxes, replacing an expiring levy, on all taxable property within the District, for support of the District’s educational programs and operations expenses not funded by the state of Washington:Collection Year Estimated Levy Rate/$1,000 Assessed ValueLevy Amount2019 $1.50 $3,300,000 2020 $1.50 $3,900,000 all as provided in Resolution No. 4.2017-2018.Explanatory StatementPassage of Proposition 1 would allow the Orting School District to replace an existing educational programs and operations levy that will expire at the end of calendar year 2018. The proposed two-year replacement educational programs and operations levy would authorize collection of taxes to provide $3,300,000 in 2019 and $3,900,000 in 2020. The tax levy rate required to produce these levy amounts is estimated to be $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed value in 2019 and $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed value in 2020. Based on recent changes to state law that reduce the District’s educational programs and operations levy, overall tax rates for combined District levies will decrease starting in 2019. Even with passage of this proposition, the District anticipates a tax rate decrease from $3.99 in 2018 to $1.50 in 2019.The taxes collected by this levy will be used to pay expenses of educational programs and operations that are not fully funded by the State of Washington, including additional staffing, teacher training, extracurricular and athletic programs, transportation services, student technology and facility maintenance and operation.Exemptions from taxes may be available to certain homeowners.
