Pierce County Proposed Charter Amendment no. 46

The Pierce County Council passed Ordinance No. 2017-35 proposing to amend Section 4.70 of the Pierce County Charter. If approved, this amendment will require the Council to fill vacancies in partisan elective offices by appointment from a list of three people submitted by the County central committee of the party represented by the official in office immediately prior to the declaration of vacancy and to fill vacancies in nonpartisan elective offices by appointment from applicants responding to a public request for applications for the vacant nonpartisan office; all as provided in Ordinance No. 2017-35. Explanatory StatementThe current version of Charter Section 4.70 does not distinguish between partisan and nonpartisan elective offices for purposes of filling vacancies. If approved, this amendment will require the Council to fill vacancies in partisan elective offices by appointment from a list of three people submitted by the County central committee of the party represented by the official in office immediately prior to the declaration of vacancy and to fill vacancies in nonpartisan elective offices by appointment from applicants responding to a public request for applications for the vacant nonpartisan office.
