Skagit Fire District 6 Proposition 1

The Board of Skagit County Fire Protection District No. 6 adopted Resolution No. 2017-06 concerning a proposition to maintain and adequately fund District operations. This proposition authorizes the District to establish its regular property tax levy at $1.05 per $1,000 of assessed value to be assessed in 2017 and collected in 2018. The funds will finance fire protection operations, replace apparatus and equipment, provide staffing and maintain emergency medical service levels. The maximum allowable levy in 2017 shall serve as the base for subsequent levy limitations as provided by chapter 84.55 RCW.Explanatory StatementSkagit County Fire Protection District No. 6 provides fire protection and emergency medical services to its citizens. This proposition will authorize the District to establish its regular real property tax levy rate (which is currently approximately $.77 per $1,000 of assessed valuation) at a levy rate not to exceed $1.05 per thousand dollars of assessed valuation. Approval of this measure will allow the District to maintain and improve the level of fire protection and emergency medical services. If the levy is approved, the District would assess the new rate in 2017 for collection in 2018. In subsequent years, absent further voter approval, increases will be subject to the limit factor in RCW Chapter 84.55, which limits increases to one percent of the prior levy plus taxes on new construction and increases in utility valuations. The District’s Board of Commissioners has determined that establishing the levy rate at $1.05 per $1,000 is necessary to maintain an effective level of services, fire fighter staffing, equipment and facilities in light of rising costs. If the levy is approved, the maximum tax per $100,000 assessed valuation would not exceed $105.00 each year or approximately $8.75 per month for fire protection and emergency medical services.
