Island County Fire Protection District No. 1 Proposition No. 1

The Board of Fire Commissioners of Island County Protection District No. 1, doing business as Camano Island Fire and Rescue, adopted Resolution No. 2017-07 concerning the District's regular property tax levy. If approved, this proposition would authorize the District to increase its 2017 regular property tax levy for collection in 2018 from approximately $1.10 to an amount not to exceed $1.35 per $1,000 dollars of assessed valuation, subject to any otherwise applicable dollar rate limitations. The dollar amount of this levy would be used for the purpose of computing the limitations for subsequent levies under RCW 84.55.050.Explanatory Statement This measure establishes the property tax levy rate for Island County Fire Protection District No. 1 (which does business as "Camano Island Fire and Rescue") at $1 .35 per thousand dollars of assessed value. This levy is the primary source of funding for emergency services provided by Camano Island Fire & Rescue. National fire department response standards and increased demand for service are challenging the Fire District's budget. State limitations on funding increases do not allow the Fire District to keep up with increasing labor and operational costs and planned capital improvement projects. Passage of Proposition No.1 will allow Camano Island Fire & Rescue to establish the levy rate at $1 .35 per $1,000 of assessed valuation as otherwise authorized by law. Voter approval of Proposition No. 1 will provide funding for Camano Island Fire & Rescue to continue with the staffing plan for fire and emergency medical/paramedic services at this year's level and planned capital improvement projects.
