Pierce Steilacoom Historical School Dist. No. 1 Director Pos. 3

4-year term No Salary, some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board Members or “directors” – are the elected governing body of the school district, serving four-year terms. The school board’s governance responsibilities fall in four major areas: Vision – focuses the work on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – provides prudent financial planning and oversight; diligent and innovative policymaking; Accountability – sets specific goals and a process for evaluation, reporting and recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – champions public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional district Superintendent and certificated teaching staff and personnel. One of the critical duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any school levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The commission sets policies and approves all spending via the budget. The council also sets salaries for district employees.

Enrollment increases will create an on-going need to add additional instructional space along with needing more teachers and staff. I plan on working with the Superintendent and her team as they review the issue. Along with reviewing the plan that is in place I would be interested in reaching out to other communities that have successfully addressed this issue. Additionally we need to address how we will recruit new teachers and keep our good teachers while our enrollment increases to help stay up with the needs of our students.
I feel that private and Charter schools serve a need in our communities, but I believe that public money should be spent in public schools that have a direct connection and responsibility to the entire community. Parents have the right and responsibility to help their child achieve success, just as taxpayers have the right to expect that their tax dollars will be well managed and support schools that are open to all students.
Throughout our life we are tested in many ways I feel that preparing students for life includes assessing comprehensive skills and abilities that they have gained throughout their school years. To prepare for life we need to assess how they are doing and how we are doing educating them. But failure is not an option, all students should be supported, I am going to advocate for every student to help them succeed and work with our superintendent to increase our graduation rates.
I know that teenagers need over 8 hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation affects physical and mental performance. Several studies show that high school students are among the most sleep-deprived groups due to a combination of academic workload, sports, extra-curricular activities and starting their day too early. Adjusting the start time can reduce tardiness, truancy and dropout rates. That being said, families and schools have set up their schedules around these start times. Getting students to school and the scheduling of after school sports, and jobs is very complicated. I am in favor of options but know that an entire school community must come together to effectively address the issue..
Through a strong sense of community. A clear plan for support. And the relentless efforts of our teachers, counselors and administrators we will continue to see our graduation rates improve .
It is important to build a positive community in our schools. Students coming to school knowing that this community is their community and that we are all responsible to take care of each other. If we notice something we should say something or ask for assistance from our teachers, staff and administrators. It is important to work with all students that feel that they are being bullied to help them feel safe in their community.
As a school board member I feel strongly that it is not about "my plan." We need to support the superintendent, building administrators and especially our teachers as they work so very hard to run our school district.
Students can learn when they are in school. They do not learn when they are not in school. Removing challenging behavior from school does very little to prevent that behavior from reoccurring. We want all our students to be successful and by providing alternatives to suspension when appropriate we will be able to teach and reteach them how to stay in school.
