4-year term No Salary, some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board Members or “directors” – are the elected governing body of the school district, serving four-year terms. The school board’s governance responsibilities fall in four major areas: Vision – focuses the work on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – provides prudent financial planning and oversight; diligent and innovative policymaking; Accountability – sets specific goals and a process for evaluation, reporting and recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – champions public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional district Superintendent and certificated teaching staff and personnel. One of the critical duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any school levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The commission sets policies and approves all spending via the budget. The council also sets salaries for district employees.

Experience (300 characters max) I have worked for several years, in a number of K12 school districts, as a sub teacher. I am currently working as a CTE instructor for the 2017-2018 school year outside of my local school board district.
Full funding of education. Our district is a tiny rural, K12 district with an enrollment of about 162 students. It is our desire to hire and retain the most qualified staff available. However, our district is unable to do that because of how teachers are paid in the State of Washington. The state salary schedule mandates what we can pay a teacher. So what that means to voters and school boards is that a teacher working in a urban district is paid the same as a teacher working in tiny rural district. Most of our teachers must commute a great distance to work. Since we are unable to compete with larger urban districts on wages and other issues that require funding, our students suffer because they are not able to receive the high quality education experience that they deserve due to high teacher turn-over. This issue alone is crushing tiny districts in our state. There is NO equity in education funding in our state with regards to rural versus urban districts.
I believe in school choice and that charter schools have a strengthening effect on the entire education system. More choices are better. Competition among schools is healthy and ultimately pushes all districts toward excellence.
Testing is an essential part of education. I support Smarter Balance testing and believe as we move forward the test will get better and better.
I support what ever works best for a given school or district. Let the local boards decide based on the needs of their students and staff. Frankly, I would like to see K12 education in the State of Washington adopt a college schedule and go year round with 10 week quarters.
Perhaps consider different type of diploma certificates. Currently it is a one size fits all. We need to better define what is "basic" education or the minimum and move forward from there. Some students want to take a more rigorous education path because their after graduation plans require it and they should be allowed to do. Some want to take a minimum course load because their after graduation plans don't require the extra rigor. If we can create ways of allowing students to differentiate their high school education and still graduate in four years total with the kids they started kindergarten with, I think we will be building an education system that produces more success stories and higher graduation rates over-all.
Clearly education starts at home. It should be addressed throughout the K12 education process as well. Bullying happens, in my opinion, because it acceptable conduct in some social circles and/or it is a result of behavior learned through negative past experiences. We need to keep educating our kids so that they grow up understanding this type of conduct is not acceptable. It is no different than educating people that smoking is bad for them. When I was a youth, smoking was acceptable, however it is much less so no. It got this way because of continuous anti-smoking education over a generation. That is how bullying needs to be addressed also.
Lots of ways. Make it fun. Have mock government proceedings, visits by officials, etc. Perhaps combine it with Washington State history and U.S, history. From my experience, kids are interested in the subject if you make it engaging and fun.
Absolutely. Students have a constitutional right to an education and when disruptive students impede the class because of their conduct then they should be removed if needed. Kids will be kids but there must be limitations to what is acceptable conduct in the classroom.
